MIT OpenCourseWare offers this graduate-level materials science course covering the atomistic and phenomenological kinetics that govern how materials process and evolve. Lectures and problem sets work through irreversible thermodynamics, diffusion mechanisms, nucleation theory, and phase transformations, then move into fluid and heat transport and morphological instabilities. The course also treats gas-solid, liquid-solid, and solid-solid reactions, building a framework for predicting microstructural change in real materials systems. Materials are the standard MIT OCW package: lecture notes, assignments, and course structure published under Creative Commons licensing, free to access with no certificate offered. The emphasis throughout is on rigorous derivation of governing equations rather than qualitative description, aimed at students who already have a background in thermodynamics and want to understand why materials transform the way they do under processing conditions.
