Linguistic Phonetics
Speech sounds are the subject, covering how humans produce and perceive them and how their acoustic properties shape phonological patterns and sound change over time. Materials from MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes, problem sets, and training in acoustic analysis and experimental techniques used to study speech. Students work with spectrograms and recordings to connect articulation, acoustics, and perception, and graduate students complete an additional set of assignments beyond the undergraduate track. The course sits within MIT's Linguistics and Philosophy department and follows the structure of an actual graduate-level phonetics course rather than a general survey.
