A graduate-level MIT OpenCourseWare course on the thermodynamics of materials, covering the laws of thermodynamics and their application to mechanical, electromagnetic, and electrochemical systems, solutions, and phase diagrams. Topics include computation of phase diagrams, statistical thermodynamics linking microscopic and macroscopic properties through ensembles, gases, crystal lattices, and phase transitions, and applications to phase stability and mixture properties. The course also addresses computational modeling and the thermodynamics of interfaces. Originally developed for MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and also taught through the Singapore-MIT Alliance as SMA 5111, the course provides lecture materials and problem sets suited to advanced undergraduate or graduate study. Materials are freely available online with no cost to access, consistent with MIT OpenCourseWare's standard model.
