Numerical Computation for Mechanical Engineers
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this introduction to programming and numerical methods built for mechanical engineering students. The course starts with elementary programming concepts, variable types, data structures, and flow control, then covers linear algebra and probability fundamentals before moving into numerical methods: interpolation, least squares and statistical regression, integration, solving linear and nonlinear equations, and ordinary differential equations. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are covered. Examples are drawn from robotics, dynamics, and structural analysis, connecting the math directly to mechanical engineering problems. Assignments require MATLAB programming, giving students hands-on practice implementing the methods rather than just seeing them derived. As with other MIT OCW offerings, course materials are free to access, with no certificate offered. The course suits students who already have some engineering background and want a working, applied grounding in computational methods rather than a pure theory course.
