MIT OpenCourseWare graduate course covering the Standard Model of particle physics, derived both through a bottom-up approach based on unitarity and the standard top-down construction using the SU3xSU2xU1 gauge group. Materials analyze classical experiments that established the Standard Model as case studies in experimental design, then move into heavy flavor physics, high-precision Standard Model tests, neutrino oscillations, and searches for new phenomena including compositeness, supersymmetry, technicolor, and grand unified theories. The course also discusses expectations from future accelerators such as B factories, the LHC, and linear electron-positron colliders. Coursework centers on a term paper requiring ongoing discussion with the instructor covering theory, measurables, detector signatures, resolution, background elimination, and signal-to-noise statistical analysis. Free to access through MIT OpenCourseWare, with no certificate offered.
