Physical Chemistry II is an MIT OpenCourseWare course covering elementary statistical mechanics, transport properties, kinetic theory, solid state chemistry, reaction rate theory, and chemical reaction dynamics. The materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams that build from the statistical treatment of molecular ensembles toward practical models of how fast reactions proceed and why. Topics include partition functions, the kinetic theory of gases, diffusion and transport coefficients, crystal structure basics, and the theoretical frameworks used to predict reaction rates, including transition state theory and collision theory. The course assumes prior exposure to physical chemistry fundamentals and is aimed at students who have already covered thermodynamics and quantum chemistry in a first course. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, all course materials are available free of charge for self-study, with no certificate offered.
