This MIT OpenCourseWare course introduces quantum mechanics as applied to chemistry. Lectures trace the historical development of quantum theory before working through wave mechanics and its application to simple systems: the particle in a box, the harmonic oscillator, the rigid rotor, and the hydrogen atom. From there the course moves into atomic structure and the logic behind the Periodic Table, then finishes with chemical bonding through valence bond and molecular orbital theory, molecular structure, and spectroscopy. Materials include lecture notes and problem sets typical of MIT's OCW physical chemistry sequence, letting a self-study student follow the same derivations and worked examples used in the on-campus course. No enrollment or certificate is offered, but all course materials are free to access and reuse under MIT's open license.
