S-Lab: Laboratory for Sustainable Business
This MIT Sloan course examines how organizations turn sustainability challenges into business opportunities. Students work through cases and readings covering manufacturing firms, resource extraction companies, start-ups, non-profits, and government bodies as they confront environmental and social pressures. Guest speakers from firms actively grappling with these issues bring practitioner perspective into the classroom discussions. The course structure pairs case analysis with direct engagement from industry, asking students to consider how individuals, organizations, and society can change fast enough to address worsening sustainability problems. Materials from MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, readings, and case assignments used in the original Sloan School classroom, offered under a Creative Commons license at no cost. No certificate is offered through OpenCourseWare, but the full course content remains accessible for self-study.
