Structure of Materials
MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers this three-part series covering how atomic and molecular arrangement determines a material's properties and applications, equivalent to MIT's sophomore-level materials structure curriculum. Part 1 introduces amorphous materials, including glasses and polymers, then covers crystalline structure, periodic atomic arrangements, and x-ray diffraction methods for determining crystal structure. Parts 2 and 3 extend these ideas into further structural analysis across a range of engineering materials. Originally run as an MITx series, the course now lives on the Open Learning Library, where all videos, readings, and problem sets are viewable and usable without enrolling. Signing up is optional and only needed to track progress. The material is free throughout, with no paid certificate mentioned.
