A graduate-level treatment of the quantum theory of solids from MIT OpenCourseWare. The course builds from crystal structure and band theory through density functional theory, then surveys the electronic properties of metals and semiconductors. Later topics cover the quantum Hall effect, phonons, electron-phonon interaction, and the microscopic theory of superconductivity. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams as published by MIT's Department of Physics, following the format typical of OCW offerings with no enrollment or fees required. The course assumes prior graduate coursework in quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, and it is aimed at students building toward research in condensed matter physics. As with other OCW courses, there is no instructor interaction or certificate, only the self-study materials from an actual MIT graduate course.
