Topics in Phonology
Phonology through the lens of computational modeling, taught at MIT. The course covers how learners might discover static phonotactics, detect alternations, handle variation and exceptions, and pick up on gradient patterns in sound systems. Coursework is hands-on: students prepare training data, run simulations of learning models, and interpret the output against real phonological data. The focus sits at the intersection of linguistic theory and computational practice, aimed at students who already have some background in phonology and want to see how formal models attempt to capture what language learners actually do. Materials are provided through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, free to access, with no certificate offered.
