MIT OpenCourseWare offers this writing and communication course for engineering and science students, examining how composition and publication shape work management and knowledge production in technical organizations. Topics include communication as an organizational process, electronic modes like email and the internet, the social and informational roles of specific document types, collaborative writing, the writing process, style, oral presentation methods, and communication ethics. Case studies anchor class discussion and several writing assignments, which include short documents, a longer report or article, and a short oral presentation. The course materials include the syllabus, assignments, and case study readings used in the original MIT class. No certificate is offered through OCW, and all materials are free to access under MIT's open license.
