Communication Skills for Academics
MIT Sloan School of Management course teaching graduate students and researchers how to communicate effectively within academia. Covers writing and revising a journal article manuscript or conference paper, delivering a conference talk or job talk, and writing a peer review, all built around material from the student's own doctoral research. Lessons address the norms of academic genres, tailoring messages to different audiences from fellow researchers to the public, and professional processes such as scholarly publishing and the academic job search. Students receive extensive feedback from peers and the instructor on drafts and presentations. Materials are provided as MIT OpenCourseWare content under a Creative Commons license, free to access, with assignments and exercises but no certificate.
