Concepts of Engineering Practice
A core graduate requirement for MIT's Master of Engineering program, this course examines what it means to work as a professional engineer on large-scale projects. Lectures, team workshops, and seminars cover written and oral communication, job placement skills, trends in engineering and construction, risk analysis and risk management, managing public information, proposal preparation, project evaluation, project management, liability, professional ethics, and negotiation. Case material draws on real large-scale engineering and construction projects to ground each topic, showing how communication and management skills apply alongside technical ones.
