MIT OpenCourseWare offers this mechanical engineering course on designing ocean systems from concept through preliminary design, using computational design tools. Students work in teams, each member responsible for a subsystem, tackling projects drawn from high-speed ships, submersibles, autonomous vehicles, and floating or submerged deep-water offshore platforms. Lectures cover hydrodynamics, structural design, power and thermal systems, materials and construction for marine environments, and methods for generating and evaluating design alternatives. The course also includes lectures on engineering ethics and builds oral and written communication skills through project presentations and reports. Materials include lecture notes, project assignments, and team-based design exercises, following MIT's standard OCW format of free access to course content with no certificate offered. It suits students with a mechanical or ocean engineering background looking for a full systems-design experience rather than a single topic lecture.
