MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers this three-part series on how the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of materials translate into working devices. Part one covers electronic materials, diodes, bipolar junction transistors, and MOSFETs. Part two moves into optical materials and devices, including photodetectors, solar cells, LEDs, lasers, optical fibers, and photonic communications. Part three covers magnetic materials and devices, from data storage and motors to transformers and spintronics, with an emphasis on emerging technologies throughout. Originally built as an MITx series, the course is archived on MIT's Open Learning Library, where all lecture materials, problem sets, and readings can be viewed and used without enrolling, or you can sign up to track progress through each module. No certificate or payment is involved.
