Introductory Quantum Mechanics I
MIT's 5.73 lays out the fundamentals of quantum mechanics for chemistry and physics students. Topics include wave properties of matter, the uncertainty principle, the Schrodinger equation, and operator and matrix methods for solving it. Applications cover one-dimensional potentials like the harmonic oscillator, three-dimensional centrosymmetric potentials including the hydrogen atom, and angular momentum and spin. The course closes with approximation methods, namely the variational principle and perturbation theory, used when exact solutions are not available. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams, following MIT's own course sequence for graduate-level quantum chemistry and physics. No enrollment or certificate is offered; the course is provided freely for self-study under MIT's OpenCourseWare license.
