Managing the Innovation Process
This MIT Sloan School of Management course examines how innovation succeeds or fails at five levels: individual, team, network, organizational, and industrial. Weekly materials combine book chapters, journal articles, and business cases, with an online forum extending discussion beyond class sessions. The course structure alternates between reflection exercises and lectures on Tuesdays and small-group case analysis followed by discussion on Thursdays. Topics move from personal creativity and team dynamics up through organizational structures and industry-level innovation patterns, drawing on real management cases to test theory against practice. The course is designed to connect prior work experience with future professional challenges around managing innovation. Provided free through MIT OpenCourseWare, the site includes the full syllabus, readings list, and assignments, though no certificate is offered.
