MIT OpenCourseWare's graduate-level course covers the optical and electronic processes in organic molecules and polymers that underlie practical optoelectronic devices. The electronic structure of a single organic molecule serves as the starting point for understanding behavior in organic aggregate structures and thin films. Topics include organic LEDs, solar cells, photodetectors, transistors, chemical sensors, memory cells, electrochromic devices, xerography, and organic non-linear optics, along with the miniaturization limits of molecular electronics and nanoscale patterning techniques. Three laboratory sessions have students practice vacuum and non-vacuum organic deposition techniques to fabricate their own active organic devices. Materials include lecture notes and lab assignments from MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department, offered free through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license with no certificate provided.
