MIT Sloan's 15.320 examines how organizations should be structured to gain strategic advantage, covering functional, divisional, and matrix designs alongside newer forms enabled by information technology, such as democratic decision-making, crowd-based organizations, internal resource markets, and other collective intelligence structures. The course weighs when each structure fits a given strategy and how technology expands what is organizationally possible. Coursework centers on team projects in which students design new organizational structures for real organizations, applying the frameworks covered in lectures and readings. Materials are published through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license and include the syllabus, assignments, and course readings, free to access with no certificate offered. The course targets advanced management students already familiar with basic organizational theory who want to apply design frameworks to live cases.
