MIT OpenCourseWare offers this advanced engineering course on designing magnets from superconducting materials. It opens with a review of electromagnetic theory, then moves into practical magnet design: choosing usable superconductors, calculating field and stress loads, and handling magnet instabilities, AC losses, and mechanical disturbances. Later sessions cover quench behavior and protection systems, experimental measurement techniques, and the cryogenics needed to keep magnets at operating temperature. A dedicated section examines newer high-temperature superconductors and the distinct design and operational challenges they pose compared to conventional low-temperature systems.
