MIT OpenCourseWare offers this mechanical engineering course on feedback control using linear transfer function models. Coverage includes time and frequency domain analysis, root locus design in the s-plane, loop shaping in the frequency domain, describing functions for assessing stability in certain nonlinear systems, extensions to state variable and multivariable control with observers, and discrete and digital hybrid systems using z-plane design. Students work through an extended design case study that ties the analytical tools together into a practical control problem. The materials come from MIT's undergraduate and graduate (2.140) offering, with the graduate track adding recitation sessions and extra assignments. As with other MIT OCW courses, lecture notes, assignments, and related materials are freely available online with no certificate offered, under a Creative Commons license.
