YALE · Financial Markets (2011) with Robert Shiller · LECTURE 20

Robert Shiller, teaching Yale's Financial Markets course (ECON 252), argues that institutional investors play a fundamental role in the economy and society, then turns to how they are governed. He examines the fiduciary duties investment managers owe under the prudent person rule and where those rules fall short. The lecture works through the major forms of institutional money management in turn: mutual funds, comparing the regulatory environments in the U.S. and Europe, trusts, and pension funds, including their history from the late 19th century and the legislative shift between defined benefit and defined contribution plans. Shiller closes with endowments, citing specific investment mistakes in endowment management, and with family offices and family foundations. Earlier segments cover household balance sheets and how modern societal change has reshaped human capital. The pacing is chapter by chapter, moving from household finance up through the institutions that manage most of the world's investment capital.
