Speech Communication
MIT's 6.541J examines how natural languages are structured, with the sound system as the central focus. Topics include how the lexicon is represented, the physiology of speech production, articulatory phonetics, the acoustical theory behind speech, and how phonetic features and prosody get described both acoustically and articulatorily. The course also covers speech perception, models of lexical access, and theories of speech planning and production, applying all of this to machine recognition and generation of speech and to the study of speech disorders. Materials follow the MIT OpenCourseWare format: lecture notes, readings, and problem sets drawn from the joint offering across MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Linguistics and Philosophy, and Health Sciences and Technology departments. No certificate is offered, consistent with OCW's open self-study model.
