This MIT OpenCourseWare course teaches how to build lumped-parameter models, expressed as ordinary differential equations, for dynamic systems in the electrical and mechanical domains. Students learn to estimate model parameters from experimental data, then find the time-domain response of linear systems to impulse, step, and ramp inputs using both analytical and computational methods. The course moves into frequency-domain analysis of sinusoidal inputs and feedback techniques for shaping a system's transient response. The capstone work has students design, build, and test an active control system against a stated performance target. Mastery is checked through homework sets, quizzes or exams, and hands-on lab assignments, giving the course a real mix of theory and bench work. Materials come from MIT's mechanical engineering department under an open license, free to access with no certificate attached.
